Guinea pigs are Herbivores which means they only eat vegetation and fruit. Don't under any circumstances feed them meat, bread-based products or any human foods, they are NOT hamsters!! On this page I will give a list of food which is definietly off the menu, and a list of food which are vital. I will start with the good food.
1. Fresh Fruit & Veg - Guinea pigs are unable to create their own vitamin C just like humans, so to stop them getting scurvy or other illnesses, it is important to give them food rich in vitamin C. Food such as bell peppers, sweet potato, melon (honeydew and water), spinach and cabbage are good sources.
2. Pellets - Pellets are a useful foodsource which should be given everyday as it contains many nutrients that guinea pigs need. Remember to read the portion sizes on the bag, as different brands will have different portions sizes!
3. Hay - Hay is a very important part of a guinea pig's diet. It should be available to your guinea pigs at all times. It is not only enjoyable for them, but it also helps clean and grind down their teeth. Remember not to give them straw, it is less soft compared to hay and they can hurt themselves on it.
It is very important to know what foods are damaging or downright deadly to your guinea pigs as they cannot vomit, so once they've eaten it they cannot get it back up.
1. Citrus Fruit - Citrus fruit is very dangerous to guinea pigs! They cause stomach and mouth ulcers which can kill. Also be careful of how much fruit you give them in general, as other fruit can have the same effect if they are given too much.
2. Potatoes - Potatoes and potato peelings are toxic to guinea pigs and can make them very ill. Sweet potatoes are fine, but shouldn't be given in large quantities, as they are fattening.
3. Iceberg Lettuce - Iceberg lettuce is low in nutrition and high in water content (which can cause kidney issues.). Use Romaine lettuce instead, as it's much better for them!
4. Garlic - Garlic is poisonous to guinea pigs! Don't feed it to them!
